National American University Online Library: Cover Letter

Cover Letter Development

A Cover Letter is a professional letter written to an employer for consideration in an employment opening.  While there are different opinions regarding whether a Cover Letter is still needed, it's a helpful document to have ready should the employer request/require one. A Cover Letter introduces yourself, states your enthusiasm for the position, summarizes your experience and accomplishments, and, when well-written, displays your writing and communication proficiency.

Cover Letter Sections

*Remember to go back to your Resume and include the statements describing your experience that you've already developed.  Your resume has action verb + accomplishment + outcome statements that detail your experience.  Use those statements, revise them into full sentences, and include them in your cover letter.

Cover Letter Templates

*Remember, if you're using a cover letter sample/template to build your document, you must develop the content so that it reflects the experience that you have. Employers can quickly detect vague "sample cover letter language" and it is imperative that your document is accurate. Do not fluff your document with exaggerated experience/results or mislead an employer. It can be grounds for dismissal, among other consequences.
