Legal Research and Writing Guide: Briefs to the Court

This guide is for legal reference and Bluebook citation assistance for all NAU students. The information in this guide is not intended as legal advice.

Briefs

Briefs filed with the court before a trial serve many different purposes. They may support motions for change of venue, motions to dismiss, motions to suppress to evidence, or motions for summary judgment. Or an attorney may file a brief right before or during trial on evidentiary or legal issues, sometimes at the request of the judge.
